Earl Martin Shaeffer, Jr.

Earl Martin Shaeffer, Jr. age 86, died January 26, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born August 13, 1931 in Grand Junction, Colorado to Helen Josephine Osborne Shaeffer and Earl Martin Shaeffer. He grew up in Grand Junction and in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Marty served 4 years in the U. S. Navy during the Korean conflict as a submariner. He then pursued his education at Brigham Young University where he earned his degree in Industrial Engineering. He married Ellen Claire Weaver August 20, 1957 in Los Angeles, California. They became the parents of three sons and one daughter. After accepting a position with Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company he was assigned to New Mexico and became the manager of the Clovis office. Resigning his position to start his own real estate development and construction company, he became a moving force, along with others, behind the building of the Colonial Park golf course and subdivision in Clovis, New Mexico. He also built projects in Midland, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Albuquerque, NM and Santa Fe, NM. As a long time private pilot he became interested in the aviation business and later became a key owner in aviation service centers in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2005 he was honored with a plaque at the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hawzy Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia, near Washington, DC, for his participation in furthering the field of aviation. The same year he was also honored as a former crew member at the U.S.S. Razorback at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas, where his actual naval submarine has become a permanent fixture on the Arkansas River. An avid outdoorsman, Marty enjoyed many years of golfing and especially fly fishing at his Dos Amigos fishing camp in Pagosa Springs, Colorado which he developed with a business partner, Cotton Simms. This partnership is now in its third generation. He was preceded in death by his parents, and only sibling, Bobbie Jo Shaeffer Irwin. He is survived by son Earl Martin Shaeffer, III and wife Erin; Jo Ellen Shaeffer and husband Kelly Kloberdanz; John Duncan Shaeffer and wife Kristin; Daniel Weaver Shaeffer and wife Angela; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
